It's not possible to fully protect a site against the updates of the algorithms of search engines but in order to minimize the damage, you can do a lot. For instance, don't target endless keywords, optimize for long tail and for less competitive keywords, post new content regularly, get backlinks from good sites only. Also, use PPC and social media as alternative traffic sources.
